In structural engineering, a Pre-Engineered Building (PEB) is designed by a manufacturer to be fabricated using a pre-determined inventory of raw materials and manufacturing methods that can efficiently satisfy a wide range of structural and aesthetic design requirements. Within some geographic industry sectors, these buildings are also called Pre-Engineered Metal Buildings (PEMB) or, increasingly, Engineered Metal Buildings (EMB) due to the advanced use of computer-aided custom design.
Historically, the primary framing structure of a PEB is an assembly of I-shaped members (I-beams), usually formed by welding together steel plates to create an I- section. These are then field-assembled using bolted connections to complete the frame. Some manufacturers taper the framing members to match local loading conditions—using larger plate sizes where needed. Other forms of primary framing may include trusses, mill sections, and castellated beams
